Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: ENE Wind Stength: 6-10kts Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 6 mph (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.2 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
First time out on water since Sept/Oct in brilliant summer weather for
foiling. Loads of the regulars at Bradders. Now swopped kit from Slingshot
to Starboard race foil - I was hoping to get some flights. The wind did
look very light. Rigged the North 9.3 S type with one cam removed but the
wind didn't play ball for my weight. It was very close 2 or 3 times on the
gusts, almost out of the water. I saw most others flying a fair bit so came
in and did a few tweaks. Set up the 115+ fuse and swopped the race 900
front wing with an 1100 Freeride wing, then swopped the 255 stab with the
330 wing, despite the misgivings of the pro's who frowned on the setup as
not ideal due to the drag of such large wings. My mast track was 3/4's
back, so moved it to the end of the box.
Unfortunately I fitted the high wind - 1.5 spacer instead of +1 on the
stab, but as the tide was about to turn, there wasn't much time to change
it.
The setup was much better for the light winds, as I pumped on good gusts
off small swell the board would just lift then drop like a stone. Spent the
whole afternoon burning calories slogging, but have a good idea about the
kit limitations now. Having used the Slingshot for a year, the 76 wing
would not have flown, but the 84 wing might have had a couple, although am
heavier this year.
Definitely no comparison between the Slingshot poor quality fuse, which I
bent twice, not hitting anything, and the Starboard fuse which is a monster
thing. It has so many screws to keep the parts together. Think you get what
you pay for. Next upgrade will be the board, and hoping to change to a 200L
+ volume board instead of my current 160 Exocet RF-91 to help with the
lighter stuff.
Nice day out at an excellent location, catching up with everyone and
watching DC and Nick pushing each other flying every inch of the
estuary.
